Chrysler says U.S. sales rose 16% last month, marking its best sales in five years.
Among its divisions — Chrysler, Dodge, Ram Truck and Fiat — each was up in January compared with the same month last year. Dodge led the divisions with a 37% increase.
The automaker touted higher sales of its Dodge Dart, which CEO Sergio Marchionne has faulted for not performing up to sales expectations at launch last June because of weak engine selections. The Dart had a 17% increase in sales last month over the previous month.
Fiat 500, the Dodge Avenger and Chrysler 200 mid-size sedans were among the models setting sales records for themselves last month. So did the Dodge Challenger muscle car, and the Jeep Patriot compact SUV.
In the critical pickup truck segment, sales of the Ram were up 14% compared to the same month a year ago.
